Top 10 Fresh Flower Tips & Tricks

10 florist secrets to get you designing a fresh flower bouquet.

When shopping for fresh flowers, look for flowers with closed blooms.  If the blooms haven’t opened the flowers will last much longer.

When shopping for roses to include in your bouquet – great florist tip:  gently squeeze the bottom of the bloom.  If the bottom of the bloom is soft the rose will only last a day or two longer.  If it’s firm – buy it.  It should last close to a week.  Before buying roses always check the bottom of the bloom.

Floral Care:  Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle about an inch from the bottom of the stem.  Florists preparing flowers for pretty bouquetCutting the stems at an angle hydrates the stems.  Stems that aren’t cut at an angle sit on the bottom of the vase unable to absorb the water.

Flower arrangement techniques – you can use different methods to hold the stems in place.  One way is to use scotch tape on top of the vase in a crisscross pattern.  This is a simple florist shortcut to make your designs more professional.

Floral Tips – When creating a fresh flower arrangement using wet floral foam soak the foam in water before placing it in the vase.  Add water to a container or sink twice the height of the foam.  Add flower food to the water, then the floral foam.  If the wet floral foam has holes on one side add the foam to the water with the holes down.  Let the foam slowly sink to the bottom.  This allows the foam to absorb the water properly.  Never force the foam down in the water as this can create dry spots in the foam.

Caring for flowers – Removing leaves from the stem will keep the flowers fresh longer.  Leaves that sit in the water collect bacteria which can be damaging to the flower stems.

Revive Flowers.  Florist tip for flowers beginning to wilt.  Wilting tulipsBefore tossing your flowers try reviving your floral arrangement.  Try this – Fill a large container with like-warm water.  Submerge the entire bouquet in the water.  While the flowers are under the water trim the flower stems an inch or two at a 45-degree angle with scissors. Leave the flowers in the water for 20 to 30 minutes.  Clean the vase you’ll use for the flower bouquet.  Place the flowers in the vase with clean water and flower food.

Florist Tips and Tricks –  A common mistake people make when they receive flowers is forgetting to give the stems a fresh cut.  Be sure to cut the stems every couple of days and add the flower food packet that comes with your arrangement.

Floral Care – Don’t place your flowers in direct sunlight. Fresh flowers will begin to dry out when placed in sunlight, near a fan or heating and cooling vent.
